Comparison: The Thief of Our Joy

Jul 09, 2022

The Lord has been revealing to me more and more in these days as a still pretty new wife and mom how comparison can be a thief of His joy in my life. His joy not based on circumstances or feelings, but based on HIs presence and truths in my life.

I hope these thoughts encourage you today and help you live your days in the fullness of His joy and peace!!

THE JOY OF THE LORD IS OUR STRENGTH.
Nehemiah 8:10

Comparison robs us of experiencing God's GREAT JOY and PEACE AND PURPOSE in our present moments.

I believe there is a healthy comparison that can convict us and move us forward to greater health and spiritual growth, but that's not what I am talking about here.

WHERE CAN COMPARISON CREEP IN?
Seasons of life (old or young, kids or not, etc...)
Parenting
Work/Professional Life
Marriage/Spouse
Family
Friendships
Mom Life
Kids (development, challenges)
Finances
Spiritual growth
Health and Fitness
Business Growth
Ministry Fruitfulness
Home/Neighbors
**It's a subtle slippery slope now even more so in our days with social media.

SIGNS COMPARISON MAY BE CREEPING IN:
Discontentment
Entitlement
Insecurity
Ungratefulness
Anxiousness
Sadness
Fear
Tiredness

Judgement
Boredom
Resentment
Jealousy

Here are some thoughts on how to ACTIVATE PRAISE and overcome temptations to compare...

  • Regularly ask Holy Spirit to reveal any areas you may be comparing yourself/circumstances to others and missing His joy.
  • Thank Him for revealing these areas. Romans 2:4 says It's His kindness that leads us to repentance. Take a moment now to get on your knees, talk with Him, receive His forgiveness, walk forward in His grace and love, expect to see transformation.
  • Ask God to heal you and help you to see Him, yourself, and your life they way He sees it.
  • Pray for others and bless them.
  • Keep a praise/gratitude journal to keep a record of how you are seeing God amidst your days.
  • Be led by the Lord in how you spend time on social media.
  • Create your own "praise pack" with verses on post its or notecards. Here are a few of my fav's for comparison:
For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ. Galatians 1:10

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. James 1:17

I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. Psalms 139:14

Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, indeed everything that is in the heavens and the earth; Yours is the dominion, O Lord, and You exalt Yourself as head over all. 1 Chronicles 29:11
